Candle jars are not all the same height, so the arm can be adjusted between 23 and 33 cm. This lets you maintain the same distance over a flat tin as over a tall apothecary jar. A dimmer and timer settings of 2, 4, or 8 hours take care of the rest.
A fixed height fits exactly one jar size. Anything taller sits too close, while anything shallower barely gets warm. A movable arm reverses the order: you buy the candle you like and adjust the lamp to it.

Loosen the arm, position the shade a few centimeters above the wax, and tighten it again. Wide jars melt more evenly than narrow ones, so start at the lower end of the range. Let the wax solidify before moving the jar.
